Practical Visionaries

There’s a special skill required to both dream of a different future for communities and create the means to get there.  Each day we encounter people who work this way – these practical visionaries want to change the world, one community at a time, one issue at a time, and they work in innovative ways to make that happen.

In 2008, Tamarack has the good fortune of engaging some of these visionaries in conversation.  This podcast series captures those conversations.

Communities Collaborating for Impact

Bringing people in communities to collaboration is an emerging field of practice. Tamarack believes that solutions to complex problems will require engaged communities working together in new and innovative ways.

The idea for this series came out of Tamarack's Communities Collaborating Institute. The inaugural offering of the Institute, held in September 2006, brought together over 70 leading collaborators from Canada (and New Zealand!) to share the challenges, joys, frustrations, and the "wicked questions" that emerge when working in a multisectoral fashion on a complex community issue.

The ideas that mattered most to those 70 plus leaders, ideas related to resilience, the ingredients of success, implications for organizations and leadership, and getting to impact, have inspired the session topics of Tamarack's 2007 tele-learning seminar series.

Movements for Change

Concerned citizens and engaged organizations across Canada are working to create a more just and caring society. They are developing new and innovative ways of working together to create solutions to the complex problems facing their communities. They are launching movements for change.

Tamarack believes that the way we work is as important as what we are working on. We also recognize that we, and many of our partners, work like an organization, but we think like a movement. That’s why, in 2006, we’re focusing our efforts on learning more about movements for change, specifically movements that are born in a local context but grow to become national or international social change efforts.

We hope that our Movements for Change learning theme will inspire and encourage your excitement about the potential of large-scale, sustainable social change in our communities and country!

Vibrant Communities Series

Learn to Include, Include to Learn

How can community collaborations facilitate the meaningful participation of low-income individuals in leadership structures and activities - both in grassroots groups and more formal roundtables?

Funding Lasting Change in Communities

Vibrant Communities believes that creating lasting community change requires a long-term, sustained effort, and a place-based approach from both the people creating the change and from the funders.

This two-part tele-learning series defines an “embedded funder” and examines the successes, challenges and the impact of funders who make a long-term, place-based and hands-on approach to funding community change.

Poverty & Poverty Reduction

Poverty is a complex problem, and like all such problems, it poses challenges even in terms of how it is framed. A wide range of factors are involved, and stakeholders have different perspectives and priorities, leading to many different conceptions of poverty.

The Poverty and Poverty Reduction learning series brought Vibrant Communities learners together in the spring of 2007 to examine alternative approaches to conceiving poverty and poverty reduction in order to strengthen the capacity of communities to make choices about how best to frame, unfold, measure and communicate about local poverty reduction efforts.

Government Engagement

The nature of public sector engagement in collaborative, comprehensive initiatives varies from one community to another. How might we understand such variation? What might each community's experience of public sector engagement, and the experiences of government officials themselves, tell us about the potential space for collaboration?

In the spring of 2007, the Vibrant Communities Government Learning Circle (GLC) convened a five-part learning series highlighting the unique ways in which the public sector is engaged in Vibrant Communities initiatives.
Through engaging with these community "stories," government learners deepened their understanding of key features of government-community collaboration, including governance arrangements, ways to create an "enabling environment," and how to achieve concrete results.

Government & Community

For government to provide leadership in service of communities, both institutional and personal commitment is needed to listen, learn, see and respond to what communities have to say.

In the spring of 2006, Vibrant Communities launched a new Government Learning Circle (GLC) to allow government learners from all levels and portfolios to engage together to learn about "what works" in collaborating for community change. In this three-part series, GLC participants explored the concept of government leadership in service of communities and examined some of the challenges faced by government officials in providing this leadership.

Social Justice Grant Making

Social justice grant making aims to get to the root of our toughest problems. By addressing underlying causes rather than simply treating symptoms, funders with a social justice focus endeavour to bring about change in systems, institutions and attitudes to allow full social and economic participation by all Canadians.

In January and February of 2006, local and national funders and contributors to Vibrant Communities came together to learn about and discuss social justice grant making. This two-part tele-learning series provides information about how a commitment to do grant making work from a social justice perspective can enable funders to address the root causes of poverty and find long-term solutions to pervasive community problems.

Action for Neighbourhood Change (ANC) Series

Neighbourhood Revitalization and Community Building

When you’re blazing trails in neighbourhood initiatives, it’s sometimes hard to envision the path ahead. However, there are people and organizations pioneering this work across the country, and beyond. Action for Neighbourhood Change (ANC) is engaging several of these key individuals in dialogue about their practice, their accumulated wisdom, and the challenges they face in doing this work.

In the spirit of sharing and learning together, ANC has invited participation in a series of six tele-learning seminars, from Vibrant Communities and from United Ways across Canada, as well as involving the five ANC neighbourhoods. The result is a dynamic conversation which we have captured and animated online, with speakers and participants alike sharing their rich depth of experience in neighbourhood revitalization!
